The Detroit Tigers have acquired right-handed pitcher Jacob Waguespack from the Milwaukee Brewers in a trade for a player to be named later or cash considerations. The deal was first reported by Evan Woodbery of MLive Media Group. Waguespack signed with the Brewers on a minor league contract last month and will not require an immediate roster spot with the Tigers unless his contract includes a clause allowing for an opt-out or promotion.
Waguespack, 32, has spent the 2024 season in Triple-A with the Brewers. Over 16 appearances and 21 2/3 innings, he has posted a 1.66 ERA, striking out 36.3% of batters faced while walking 16.5%. His performance has been aided by a .238 batting average on balls in play and a 73.2% strand rate. The right-hander brings big league experience from stints with the Blue Jays and Rays, where he logged 105 2/3 innings with a 5.11 ERA.
The Tigers are currently managing a significant workload of pitching injuries, with nine pitchers on the big league injured list. Key arms like Tarik Skubal, Justin Verlander, Casey Mize and Kenley Jansen are all expected to return soon, creating potential roster challenges. Waguespack’s acquisition gives the Tigers added depth without immediate 40-man roster implications unless his contract includes provisions for a call-up.
Waguespack’s minor league deal with the Tigers could become active if the club adds him to the 40-man roster. If that happens, he would need to be placed on the active 26-man roster since he is out of minor league options. For now, the Tigers are likely using him as an insurance policy in the event of further injuries or unexpected roster changes.
The Brewers received a player to be named later or cash in return for Waguespack. The deal allows Milwaukee to clear a minor league roster spot while still retaining flexibility. Detroit benefits from a right-handed reliever with big league experience and a high strikeout rate.
As the Tigers prepare for the stretch run and potential playoff push, they will monitor the health of their pitching staff closely. Waguespack could be a valuable asset if any further roster adjustments are needed. The Tigers will continue to evaluate their options as the season moves forward.

The Padres have signed first baseman Nick Pratto to a minor league contract and assigned him to Triple-A El Paso. The move comes just one day after the Rangers released Pratto, ending his brief stay with Texas for the 2024 season.
