TITLE: U.S. MNT Falls 2-0 to Portugal in Final 2026 Warm-Up
The U.S. Men’s National Team lost 2-0 to Portugal in a key international friendly at Red Bull Arena, marking their final match before World Cup rosters are set. The Americans made 11 changes from their previous match, with 10 players earning their first caps in this tournament cycle. Despite a solid effort in possession and two shots on goal in the first half, the U.S. struggled to break through a disciplined Portuguese defense.
Mauricio Pochettino went with a 4-2-3-1 formation, starting Matt Freese in goal, a move that saw him record five saves in his first senior international start. Freese made a key stop in the 17th minute to deny João Félix after a quick counterattack. The backline, featuring Chris Richards, Auston Trusty, and Alex Freeman, held strong for the majority of the match but couldn’t prevent a second-half goal from João Cancelo.
Portugal took the lead in the 57th minute when Cancelo curled a shot from 25 yards past Freese. The U.S. responded with more pressure in the final 20 minutes, with Sebastian Berhalter and Aidan Morris combining well in the midfield. Morris had the best chance of the night in the 76th minute, but his header from a corner was cleared off the line.
Christian Pulisic, playing as the lone striker, had just three shots in the match, none of which were on target. Folarin Balogun, who started the previous match, was left on the bench as Pochettino tested different attacking options. The U.S. finished the night with five shots, only one of which was on frame, while Portugal outshot them 14-5 overall.
Despite the loss, there were positives for the U.S. Richards and Trusty played the full 90 minutes and looked composed under pressure. Berhalter, playing in his second consecutive match, made three key passes and helped control the tempo in the midfield.
With the World Cup just weeks away, the U.S. will finalize their 26-man roster on September 5. The team will need to regroup quickly and prove they can compete with top-tier opposition in the tournament.
Next up for the U.S. is the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where they’ll open against Wales on November 21 in Philadelphia.

The San Antonio Spurs edged the Dallas Mavericks 114-109 on Friday night, but the story was not the win. It was Victor Wembanyama’s 40-point, 13-rebound performance in just 26 minutes, a calculated move to reach the 65-game threshold required for regular-season award eligibility.
