The United States Women's National Team dropped a 2-1 decision to Brazil in a fast-paced and physical friendly at Neo Química Arena in São Paulo. Sophia Wilson scored her first international goal since October 2024, but the USWNT could not match Brazil’s intensity over 90 minutes.
Wilson opened the scoring in the second minute with a clinical finish. After winning the ball in midfield, she drove into the penalty area and curled a shot into the far post for her 25th career goal. The goal was a quick statement from the USWNT, but it would not hold for long.
Brazil responded quickly, equalizing in the 12th minute through Tainá Maranhão. A throw-in from the right side was played into the box by Isabela Chagas, and Maranhão headed it past goalkeeper Mandy McGlynn. Just three minutes later, Brazil took the lead through Dudinha, who converted after a give-and-go with Bia Zaneratto inside the penalty area.
The second half featured a number of chances for both sides. Zaneratto had a shot go over the bar while Claire Hutton saw her effort tipped over by Brazil’s goalkeeper Letícia. Substitutes Avery Patterson and Michelle Cooper added energy in the final 20 minutes, but the USWNT could not find an equalizer.
Rodman was sent off late in the match after receiving a yellow card for throwing the ball at Brazil’s Gio Queiroz. The moment added to the physical nature of the game, which saw eight minutes of stoppage time.
Brazil’s high press and quick transitions overwhelmed the US defense in the opening 15 minutes. The hosts won 59% of duels in that span, forcing the US into 11 turnovers. The USWNT struggled to build from the back, with the back four failing to control the tempo in the early stages.
Goalkeeping remains a question mark for the USWNT. McGlynn made a strong save on Queiroz in the 78th minute but had several shaky moments throughout the match. Claudia Dickey may get the nod in the next game.
The USWNT will face Brazil again on Tuesday at Castelão in Fortaleza. The matches are part of a short friendly series ahead of the 2026 CONCACAF W Championship, where World Cup qualification will be decided.
