Germán Berterame ended an eight-match goal drought in all competitions with his first Inter Miami CF goal in a 2-2 draw with Red Bull New York on April 12. The Mexican forward converted a loose ball in the 55th minute after a Lionel Messi run set up the chance, briefly putting Miami ahead at Nu Stadium.
Miami signed Berterame from CF Monterrey in January for a reported $15 million transfer fee. The striker made 153 appearances in LIGA MX, recording 68 goals and 15 assists. Despite strong performances in the Concacaf Champions Cup and with the Mexican national team, Berterame struggled to find the net early in his MLS career.
The goal is a significant step for Berterame's confidence as the 2026 FIFA World Cup approaches. Mexico will co-host the tournament, and with the opening match set for June 11, Berterame is in contention for a starting role up front. Head coach Javier Aguirre has regularly called him into the squad since his international switch.
Berterame's timing could not be better. The 30-year-old has earned 17 caps for Mexico since 2023 and is vying for a spot alongside Fulham FC’s Raúl Jiménez and AC Milan’s Santiago Giménez as Mexico’s primary strikers. A consistent run of form in MLS could secure his place in the World Cup squad.
Inter Miami remains in the early stages of building a new identity at Nu Stadium. The team is coming off two consecutive draws to start the season but has shown flashes of promise with Messi and De Paul on the field. Berterame’s goal gives the offense a much-needed boost as they prepare for a tough road stretch.
Miami will face the Colorado Rapids on April 18 before traveling to Real Salt Lake on April 22. Both games will test the team's ability to maintain momentum after a slow start. With the World Cup looming and Messi anchoring the midfield, the pressure is on Berterame to continue delivering.
