Vancouver Whitecaps FC made history Saturday night with a 2-0 win over New York City FC, extending their best start in MLS history to 6-1-0. Brian White was the star, scoring his team-leading sixth goal of the season in the 87th minute and netting the 700th goal in club history.
The goal came on a diving header inside the six-yard box, capping off a night where White put seven shots on frame. USMNT goalkeeper Matt Freese made several key saves to keep the game close, but White’s persistence paid off late.
White credited Vancouver head coach Jesper Sørensen for pushing him to be more selfish with the ball this season. “I’ve pushed myself to be more selfish,” White said. “Like my half chances to really try and push myself and try and create goals. I just kept trying to score, my teammates giving me good passes, just kept trying and trying, and then finally, it fell in.”
The Whitecaps are now atop the Supporters’ Shield and Western Conference standings. They lead the league in points (18), goals scored (19), and goal differential (+15) through seven matches. Sebastian Berhalter assisted on Vancouver’s opening goal, marking his fifth assist of the season and continuing his strong early campaign.
Sørensen praised White’s performance and resilience. “I think that he is now a little bit more dynamic in the part of our buildup, and also a guy who can turn and go in front against their goal. I also have to say that Freese had a very good game and he had some very good saves.”
White now sits just one goal behind Golden Boot leaders Petar Musa of FC Dallas and Sam Surridge of Nashville SC. The Whitecaps will look to continue their historic pace when they host Red Bull New York next Saturday at BC Place.
