The Philadelphia Union ended their six-game losing streak with a 2-1 victory over CF Montréal on Saturday at Stade Saputo. Goals from Japhet Sery Larsen and Jesús Bueno lifted the Union to their first win of the 2026 MLS season, giving the team its first three points after a rough start.
Philadelphia had struggled to find its rhythm in the early stages of the season despite finishing as the 2025 Supporters' Shield champions with 66 points. The Union entered the match winless in their first six games, a stark contrast to their dominant regular-season form in 2025.
The match was a back-and-forth affair. Iván Jaime gave Montréal the lead in the 23rd minute, but the Union responded in the second half. Larsen leveled the score with a header in the 57th minute, and Bueno delivered the winner in the 73rd to seal the comeback.
Goalkeeper Andre Blake made four critical saves to keep the Union in the match. The Union also outperformed Montréal in expected goals (xG), 1.8 to 0.8, showing they deserved the result.
Head coach Bradley Carnell praised his team's effort after the game. "Today was the performance of a team, and I'm really happy for them," he said. "We're in a tough moment as a club, as players and coaches and staff and everyone. But it shows what it means now, going down to the locker room and seeing the joy and relief on faces."
The win comes after a challenging offseason for the Union. Key players like Kai Wagner, Jakob Glesnes, Tai Baribo, and Mikael Uhre moved on, forcing Carnell to rebuild his starting XI. The transition has had consequences, including an early exit from the 2026 Concacaf Champions Cup.
Carnell, who won the 2025 Sigi Schmid MLS Coach of the Year award, said the victory is just the beginning. "We've been close for so many games now, and we finally got one over the hump," he said. "Now we have to build a level of consistency and challenge ourselves to start winning the game in the week. I felt this game was won on Tuesday and Wednesday's training practice."
The Union will look to carry this momentum into their next match. They host D.C. United at Subaru Park on Saturday at 7:30 pm ET on Apple TV.
