Dink Pate, the former G League Ignite standout and Westchester Knicks affiliate, committed to Providence on Thursday. His agent confirmed the decision to ESPN, marking a major addition for the Friars under new head coach Bryan Hodgson.
Pate was a top-30 recruit in the 2023 class before choosing to play for the G League Ignite. The 6-foot-6 guard played one season with Westchester, averaging 16.8 points and 6.7 rebounds per game. His decision to return to the collegiate ranks adds a proven scorer to Providence’s roster.
Also on Thursday, Providence secured a commitment from transfer Miles Byrd, who was named Mountain West Defensive Player of the Year. The 6-foot-7 forward brings high-level perimeter defense and versatility to a Friars team looking to rebuild under Hodgson.
The additions of Pate and Byrd represent significant momentum for the program. Pate’s scoring ability and Byrd’s defensive prowess give the Friars a two-headed threat capable of impacting both ends of the floor. With just one season of eligibility remaining for Byrd and two for Pate, the Friars are positioning themselves for an immediate turnaround in the Big East.
Pate’s decision to commit to Providence comes after a year spent in the G League, where he developed under NBA coaching and in a professional environment. His 16.8 points per game with Westchester ranked second on the team last season. His ability to create his own shot and play off the ball gives him a high ceiling in college.
Byrd, meanwhile, brings a defensive identity that is rare in today’s college game. He averaged 1.8 steals and 1.4 blocks per game in his junior season at Nevada. His 6-foot-7 frame and quickness make him a matchup nightmare for opposing guards.
With both commitments in hand, Providence is building a competitive roster for the 2024-25 season. The Friars open the season on November 5 against the University of Maine in the Charleston Classic.

Washington Wizards forward Alex Sarr will miss the final three games of the 2023-24 season with a toe injury. Head coach Brian Keefe confirmed the news on Thursday, stating that a return is unlikely given the limited time remaining in the regular season.
