Billy Donovan will meet with Chicago Bulls president and CEO Michael Reinsdorf in the coming days to discuss his future with the organization. The meeting comes after the team fired executive vice president of basketball operations Arturas Karnisovas and general manager Marc Eversley last week. Donovan, who is entering his seventh season with the Bulls, said Sunday that the team is at a "pivot point."
"I love being in Chicago and the organization and everything about it," Donovan said before the Bulls' regular-season finale against the Dallas Mavericks. "But we're at this pivot point right now where everything has changed. Find out where we're all at on this. And how we're going to move forward."
Reinsdorf has publicly supported Donovan's continued role as head coach. At a press conference following the executive departures, Reinsdorf said any new front office candidate who does not want to retain Donovan would likely not be the right fit. He later clarified in writing that Donovan's status would not take "precedence in the process."
Donovan has a 226-255 record in six seasons with the Bulls. The team has struggled to return to playoff contention, finishing with a 29-53 record this season. The Bulls have not made the postseason since 2019, and the front office changes signal a new era for the franchise.
Despite the uncertainty, Donovan said he is committed to Chicago and has no interest in pursuing opportunities elsewhere. "I'm committed here to Chicago," he said. "I'm going to try to be where my feet are planted. I'm going to stay there and stay committed to where I'm at."
The Bulls' next step is to interview candidates for the general manager position. Marc Eversley and Arturas Karnisovas were both long-time figures in the organization, with Karnisovas hired in 2018 and Eversley in 2019. Their departures leave a leadership vacuum that the front office must now fill quickly.
The Bulls are also set to meet with New York Knicks coach Michael Malone, who has been linked to the GM vacancy. The Knicks, led by Malone, finished with a 37-45 record this season but have been connected to several high-profile trade targets.
Donovan's meeting with Reinsdorf is expected to take place in the next week. The Bulls have until the end of June to finalize their new front office structure before free agency begins.
