The Dallas Mavericks have fired head coach Jason Kidd as part of a strategic shift led by new president of basketball operations Masai Ujiri, according to sources speaking to Marc Stein of The Stein Line. The decision comes after several conversations between Ujiri and Kidd over the past two weeks and marks the end of a five-season coaching stint that ended with a .500 winning percentage.
Kidd, who was hired in 2019, compiled a 205-205 record during his tenure in Dallas. The Mavs reached the Western Conference Finals in 2020 but have struggled to maintain consistent success since. With the team finishing 24-48 in the 2023-24 season, Ujiri appears ready to reset the coaching staff to align with his vision for the franchise.
Co-general manager Matt Riccardi is also leaving the organization, signaling a broader leadership overhaul. Ujiri, who joined the Mavs in April, reportedly signed an eight-figure contract with the team, underscoring his importance to the front office’s long-term plans.
Sean Sweeney, a former Mavs assistant coach, is among the names being discussed as a potential candidate for the head coaching job. Sweeney worked under Kidd during the 2019-20 season and has experience in player development and system building. However, no official announcement has been made, and sources indicate there is no clear favorite at this time.
Ujiri’s decision to part ways with Kidd suggests a desire to implement a new system and possibly reshape the roster. The Mavericks will enter the 2024-25 season with a young core led by Luka Dončić and a roster in need of complementary talent. With the NBA draft and free agency approaching, Ujiri will have the opportunity to reshape the team on and off the court.
The Mavs will announce their decision regarding the head coaching position in the coming weeks. With the new regime in place, Dallas aims to rebuild with a fresh perspective and renewed focus on long-term success.
