Michigan basketball head coach Dusty May has signed a long-term contract extension, ensuring he will remain at the helm of the program for the foreseeable future. The deal was announced Saturday by athletic director Warde Manuel during a ceremony honoring the Wolverines' NCAA championship win.
Manuel confirmed the agreement during remarks at Crisler Center, where the crowd responded with a standing ovation and chants of "Dusty!" "Dusty and I have already reached an agreement," Manuel said. "And he will be the leader of this basketball team for many years to come."
May, 51, has quickly become a key figure in the rebuilding of Michigan's basketball program. Since taking over in 2021, he led the Wolverines to a 69-30 overall record and their first national championship in 2024. The team went 32-5 this season, finishing with a 15-5 mark in the Big Ten.
The extension comes after a season that saw Michigan outscore its opponents by an average of 9.2 points per game. The Wolverines also reached the Final Four for the first time since 2018 and earned a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament, where they defeated Texas and UConn en route to the title.
This is the second major commitment from Manuel to May, who was first hired after a successful stint at Florida State. In two seasons with the Seminoles, he compiled a 38-23 record and led the team to a NCAA tournament appearance in 2021.
With May under contract through at least 2028, the Wolverines will continue to build around their young core. The team returns five starters next season, including consensus All-American center Zach Edey, who averaged 20.1 points and 10.4 rebounds per game this season.
Michigan will begin preparations for the 2024-25 season in early October. The team is expected to enter spring practices with high expectations after winning the program's first national title since 1989.

The San Antonio Spurs edged the Dallas Mavericks 114-109 on Friday night, but the story was not the win. It was Victor Wembanyama’s 40-point, 13-rebound performance in just 26 minutes, a calculated move to reach the 65-game threshold required for regular-season award eligibility.
