Giannis Antetokounmpo’s trade value is gaining traction in the NBA as Victor Wembanyama’s emergence forces teams to rethink roster strategies. With the Milwaukee Bucks preparing for the summer trade market, the 23-year-old Greek forward may now be a key piece in the league’s evolving power dynamics.
Giannis had faced uncertainty entering the offseason due to injury concerns, the shifting value of draft picks, and reluctance to offer long-term supermax deals. But Wembanyama’s performance, especially in the Spurs’ 4-2 first-round series win over the Oklahoma City Thunder, has reignited interest in Giannis as a potential solution to the 7-foot-4 rookie’s dominance.
Three anonymous executives told The Athletic that teams are now building rosters with Wembanyama in mind. “Giannis is a matchup solution for Wemby,” said one Western Conference executive. “I could definitely see teams factoring that in when they’re discussing trading for him.”
Giannis brings a unique combination of size (6-11, 243 pounds), speed, and basketball IQ that few in the league can match. His ability to guard in the paint and switch onto perimeter players is seen as essential against Wembanyama’s all-around game.
Teams like the Utah Jazz have already acted. They acquired Jaren Jackson Jr. and kept their big men roster intact, signaling a shift toward building size to counter Wembanyama. “Trust me, it’s on everybody’s mind,” said an Eastern Conference executive. “Teams will try to find ways that they can build a roster out to beat the Spurs, just like they are to beat OKC.”
The Milwaukee Bucks remain in position to leverage Giannis’ value. Four of the six teams linked to him, Spurs, Thunder, Knicks, and Cavaliers, are all vying for a title-ready core. However, the Spurs and Thunder have shown little interest in parting with the assets needed for a Giannis deal.
The Bucks are expected to demand at least two first-round picks and a young player in return. The Knicks and Cavaliers lack the necessary tradeable assets, while the Spurs and Thunder have signaled hesitation.
Giannis will be a focal point of trade talks as the NBA Draft and free agency approach. With the trade deadline for draft-night deals set for June 21, teams must decide whether to pay the price to acquire Milwaukee’s two-time MVP.
