The Orlando Magic had serious interest in hiring Jason Kidd as their head coach in 2021 but ultimately chose Jamahl Mosley instead, sources told Marc Stein of The Stein Line. That decision has taken on new significance now that Kidd has parted ways with the Dallas Mavericks and the Magic are reportedly considering several candidates, including Billy Donovan, Jeff Van Gundy, and Sean Sweeney.
Kidd spent the past two seasons with the Mavericks, compiling a 117-99 record over 138 games. He reached the 2023 Western Conference Finals and helped Luka Dončić win his first regular-season MVP. Despite that success, the Mavericks opted to move on from Kidd after Tuesday’s season-ending loss to the Nuggets in the first round of the playoffs.
Jamahl Mosley, who was the Magic’s head coach from 2021 to 2024, was fired in May after a 29-53 season. He has since been hired by the New Orleans Pelicans, where he will work under new GM Trae Breaux and alongside a young roster that went 36-46 last season. Mosley’s tenure in Orlando included a 21-60 record in his final year.
The Magic have struggled to find consistent success in recent years. Their 21-60 record in 2023-24 was their second-worst in franchise history, behind only the 2021-22 season, when they went 19-63. The team has not made the playoffs since 2020 and is looking for a fresh start under new ownership led by Josh Harris.
Sources indicate that the Magic are in early conversations with several coaching candidates. Billy Donovan, who led the Suns to back-to-back Western Conference Finals, is a known name in the market. Jeff Van Gundy, a former NBA coach and current ESPN analyst, is also being considered. Sean Sweeney, an assistant with the Warriors, brings a modern offensive approach and experience with a championship team.
The Magic’s next move could shape their direction for years to come. With key young players like Paolo Banchero and Franck Kamano in the fold, the team is in a rebuild phase. The coaching decision will be critical in how they navigate that transition.
The Magic are expected to finalize their decision in the coming weeks, with the start of training camp in October serving as a key deadline.
