The Orlando Magic remain interested in hiring San Antonio Spurs assistant Sean Sweeney as their next head coach, according to sources who spoke with Marc Stein of The Stein Line. The team has explored several top-tier candidates, including Billy Donovan and Jeff Van Gundy, as it looks to build a long-term contender.
Sweeney, 50, has spent the past two seasons as an assistant with the Spurs, working under Gregg Popovich. His experience in a top coaching staff has made him a sought-after figure in the NBA. The Magic have not ruled out hiring him, despite also considering other high-profile names.
The Magic’s coaching search has been shaped by their recent struggles. The team finished the 2023–24 season with a 20–62 record, the second-worst in the league. A new head coach is expected to play a key role in turning around the franchise, especially with young stars like Paolo Banchi and Jalen Suggs entering their prime.
Sweeney is also in the running for the Chicago Bulls’ head coaching vacancy. The Bulls have not finalized their decision and are expected to announce a hire by the end of the month. If Sweeney is not hired by Chicago, the Magic may move quickly to secure his services.
Billy Donovan, who was previously the Magic’s interim coach in 2021, has been a top candidate for several teams this season. Jeff Van Gundy, a veteran NBA coach and analyst, has also been linked to the Magic’s job. Both have extensive experience and a strong understanding of offensive systems.
The Magic previously had interest in Jason Kidd for the head coaching role in 2021, but he ultimately joined the New York Knicks. That move left the Magic without a long-term coaching direction, contributing to the instability that has defined their recent seasons.
The Magic have until June 30 to finalize their coaching hire, though league sources indicate a decision could come sooner. The team’s ownership has made it clear they want a coach who can develop young talent and build a culture of accountability.
With the 2024–25 season on the horizon, the Magic’s coaching decision will be critical. The team holds multiple draft picks and has the cap flexibility to make a splash in free agency. Hiring the right head coach could signal a new era for a franchise that has struggled to find consistency.
