Washington Wizards forward Alex Sarr underwent surgery to repair a fractured foot on Monday after sustaining the injury during an offseason workout. The team expects the second-year forward to be fully recovered in time for the start of the 2024-25 NBA season.
Sarr’s injury came during a contact play last week while participating in voluntary team activities. The 2024 second overall pick will now begin his recovery, with the hope of contributing immediately alongside Anthony Davis in the Wizards’ frontcourt.
Sarr showed significant growth in his rookie season, averaging 16.3 points, 7.4 rebounds, 2.7 assists, and 2.0 blocks per game over 48 contests. His Player Efficiency Rating (PER) increased from 12.8 as a rookie to 19.0 in his second season, highlighting his development on both ends of the floor.
The Wizards selected Sarr with the second pick in the 2024 NBA draft, signaling their intent to build around him as a cornerstone of their young core. Now in his third season, Sarr is expected to play a pivotal role in Washington’s plans to compete in the Eastern Conference.
Sarr’s surgery and recovery timeline will not push back his anticipated return to the court. The Wizards have not scheduled any major training camp activities until September, giving Sarr ample time to rehab and prepare for team practices.
With Davis and Sarr forming the foundation of the Wizards’ frontcourt, the team’s success will largely depend on their ability to complement each other. Sarr’s versatility as a playmaking forward could provide Washington with a unique advantage in the 2024-25 season.
The Wizards open training camp on September 28. Sarr’s availability for the first day of camp will be a key indicator of his readiness for the season.
