Knicks Passed on Mitchell in 2022, Chose Brunson and Built a Champion

The New York Knicks nearly acquired Donovan Mitchell in 2022 but ultimately decided against the move after already committing to Jalen Brunson, according to ESPN's Ramona Shelburne. Sources confirm that executives were divided on whether Mitchell and Brunson could coexist in the backcourt. The Knicks opted to preserve cap flexibility and assets, choosing a different path that ultimately led to a 2026 NBA championship.

At the time, the Utah Jazz demanded a high price for Mitchell, which Leon Rose and the Knicks brass felt was not justified. Instead of matching the asking price, Rose focused on assembling a roster tailored to Brunson's strengths. The team used remaining cap space and draft assets to acquire Josh Hart, OG Anunoby, Mikal Bridges, and Karl-Anthony Towns in the following months.

Brunson, who signed a four-year, $104 million contract in July 2022, has since become the foundation of the Knicks' success. He averaged 24.3 points and 6.8 assists per game during the 2026 playoffs, earning Finals MVP honors as New York defeated the Boston Celtics in six games.

The Jazz eventually shipped Mitchell to the Cleveland Cavaliers in a trade that included multiple first-round picks and young players. Since the move, the Cavaliers have advanced to the playoffs in both 2023 and 2024 but were eliminated by the Knicks in both series. Mitchell averaged 23.1 points per game in 2023-24 but failed to lead Cleveland past the first round.

The Knicks’ decision to pass on Mitchell marked a shift from past aggressive trades, such as the 2011 acquisition of Carmelo Anthony, which cost New York the 2012 and 2013 first-round picks and future considerations. This time, the Knicks prioritized stability and fit over star power.

Brunson’s rise to stardom has silenced critics who questioned the Knicks’ decision in 2022. His 2026 season saw him finish with averages of 22.5 points and 7.1 assists per game, leading the league in playmaking and finishing fifth in MVP voting.

With the 2026-27 season approaching, the Knicks will look to defend their title while managing a cap situation that remains tight. The team has until July 1 to finalize their roster and could explore adding a veteran off the bench or re-signing key role players.
