The Dallas Cowboys entered the 2026 NFL Draft with a clear mission: rebuild their defense into a dominant unit. The results speak for themselves. With Malachi Lawrence and Caleb Downs as the headliners, the Cowboys added a pair of potential stars who could impact the team for years to come.
Malachi Lawrence, a 6-foot-4, 253-pound edge rusher from UCF, was selected in the first round and is projected to be a solid starter. Lawrence brings speed, functional power, and a violent style of play to the defensive line. In college, he recorded 21.5 tackles for loss and 8.5 sacks over his final two seasons. Lawrence’s ability to bend the corner and close on the quarterback gives him the potential to thrive alongside veterans like Quinnen Williams and Rashan Gary. While he’ll need to refine his pass-rushing moves and consistency as a run defender, the coaching staff believes Lawrence can develop into a three-down contributor.
Caleb Downs, a first-round safety from Ohio State, is the team’s most exciting pick. The 5-foot-10, 190-pound safety totaled 258 tackles, six interceptions, and two punt returns for touchdowns over his three seasons with Alabama and Ohio State. Downs is a problem solver with elite instincts and the speed to cover deep zones or play man coverage. His coverage range and football IQ make him a perfect fit in Dallas’ aggressive defensive scheme. While his size is a concern, the Cowboys believe his strength and tackling ability will translate well at the pro level. Early in his career, Downs has the potential to become a Pro Bowl-caliber safety.

Jaishawn Barham, a fifth-round edge rusher from Michigan, is the most likely to bust. While the Cowboys drafted three edge rushers in the first three rounds, Barham lacks the upside of his fellow pass rushers. He’s more likely to serve as a rotational piece rather than a starter. Barham’s lack of standout college production and inconsistent pass-rush technique make him a high-risk, low-reward selection.
L.T. Overton, a fourth-round defensive tackle from Alabama, could provide valuable depth. Overton totaled 15 tackles for loss and 5.5 sacks in his final two seasons with the Crimson Tide. He has the flexibility to play both end and tackle, which gives the Cowboys more options in their defensive line rotation. Overton will need to earn his spot on the 53-man roster but should be a key part of the team’s future plans.

Next up for the Cowboys is the 2026 training camp, where these rookies will begin to prove themselves. With a revamped defense and a young core emerging, the future looks bright for Dallas.
