Belfast Giants defeated Glasgow Clan 1-0 in a low-scoring first-leg showdown at the SSE Arena on Saturday night, taking a narrow one-goal lead into Sunday’s return leg. The decisive goal came with just over a minute left in regulation, as Nicolas Guay found the back of the net off a setup from Reid Irwin. Jake Kupsky stopped all 27 shots he faced to earn the shutout.
The first period was a battle of wills, with both teams generating chances but failing to convert. Daniel Tedesco had the best opportunity for Belfast, but his shot rang off the post. The Giants also failed to capitalize on a powerplay, leaving the game deadlocked at 0-0 after 20 minutes.
The second period followed a similar pattern, with neither side able to break through the defense. Sami Aittokallio made 19 saves to keep Glasgow in the game, while Kupsky continued to stand tall for Belfast. Both teams had opportunities on the man advantage but were unable to convert, leaving the score still tied heading into the third.
Belfast had the better chances in the final frame but struggled to finish. Jordan Kawaguchi missed wide after a promising setup, and Carsen Twarynski saw his redirection saved by Aittokallio. The breakthrough finally came with 1:58 remaining when Irwin fed Guay in the slot, and the forward calmly put Belfast ahead.
Kupsky made one final big stop on the goal line with just seconds left to preserve the lead, showcasing the kind of clutch play that defined the night.

“I think we kinda eased into the game a little bit,” Kupsky said. “We didn’t really give them too much and played a pretty patient hockey game, then through the second half of the game I think we turned it on. Now we’ve got to keep playing hard like we did in the last 30.”
The Giants (22-11-5) now have the slight edge in the best-of-three series and will look to close it out in Glasgow on Sunday. The Clan (16-16-6) will need a strong start to even the series, with Aittokallio’s netminding and the home crowd potentially giving them a boost.
