The Vegas Golden Knights lost 4-1 to the Carolina Hurricanes in Game 5, putting them on the brink of elimination in the 2026 Stanley Cup Final. With their season on the line, Vegas must find a way to avoid a sweep and force a Game 7. The Golden Knights trail the best-of-seven series 3-2, and the pressure is squarely on their shoulders in Game 6.
Carter Hart has struggled in the series, allowing 12 goals in four appearances. His save percentage of .832 is the third-worst among goalies in the Final. While some of the goals have come from soft bounces and rebounds, the Hurricanes have taken full advantage of his inconsistencies. Vegas must protect Hart and give him a clean game if they want to have a chance in Game 6.
John Tortorella has remained steadfast in his support of Hart, and the coach’s confidence could be a key factor in the goalie’s performance. But trust alone won’t be enough if the Golden Knights can’t do the work in front of the net. Vegas ranks 15th in the NHL in blocked shots this postseason, and they must increase that number to take pressure off Hart.
The Golden Knights also need to clean up their penalty issues. In Game 5, they took four penalties in the first period alone, including a double minor on a high-stick call. The Hurricanes scored two power-play goals in the game, and their power play is now 11-for-26 in the series. Carolina’s top unit has been dominant, and every man advantage is a potential death sentence for Vegas.
William Karlsson’s absence adds another layer of complexity for Vegas. The Golden Knights need a player to step in and fill his role on the top line. Whoever takes over must be responsible defensively and win puck battles in the corners. Line chemistry is crucial at this stage, and any missteps could open the door for the Hurricanes to close the series out.

If Vegas can stabilize their defense, protect Hart, and avoid the box, they give themselves a realistic chance to force a Game 7. The Golden Knights must play with structure and discipline. They can’t afford to chase the game or make careless mistakes.
The next step for the Golden Knights is a must-win Game 6 at T-Mobile Arena. The series concludes on Saturday night, and the Stanley Cup is on the line.
