The Fort Wayne Komets edged the Kansas City Mavericks 4-3 in a wild overtime finish Saturday night to even the Western Conference Final at one game apiece.
Fort Wayne came out strong, as Dru Krebs opened the scoring with a tip-in at 6:25 of the first period. Just over a minute later, Harrison Rees doubled the lead, giving the Komets a 2-0 advantage. Kansas City responded in the second, with Justin Janicke scoring late in the frame to bring the Mavericks within one.
The third period was a rollercoaster. Matt Copponi gave Fort Wayne a 3-2 lead at 14:13, but Kansas City’s penalty kill shined in the final minute as they tied the game with 55 seconds left. The Komets, however, answered immediately on the ensuing faceoff with Josh Bloom scoring at 19:34 to seal the 4-3 win.
Nathan Day was the standout performer, making 35 saves to earn the win. Krebs and Rees led the offense with first-period goals, while Copponi and Bloom delivered clutch scores in the third. Janicke’s second-period tally was the only goal for Kansas City in the frame.
The Komets outshot the Mavericks 39-28 in the game, including 16-6 in the third period. The win gives Fort Wayne momentum heading into Game 3, which shifts back to Kansas City’s Enterprise Center.

The Mavericks had a golden opportunity to take control late in the third, but the Komets' composure in the final two minutes proved critical. With their netminder pulled, Kansas City’s tying goal came too late, and Fort Wayne capitalized on the next shift.
The series now heads back on the road for the Mavericks, who are looking to regain control in Game 3. The Komets, meanwhile, are riding a wave of offensive production and stellar goaltending.
The next game is set for Tuesday night in Kansas City. The series is tied at one game apiece, with each team holding home-ice advantage in the next two contests.
