The Sheffield Steelers and Guildford Flames played to a 1-1 draw in the first leg of their playoff quarter-final at the National Ice Centre on Saturday night. The result sets up a crucial second leg at the Sky’s Edge on Sunday where the Steelers will look to seize control of the series.
Evan Jasper was the hero for the Steelers, scoring the equaliser just three minutes after the Flames took the lead through Jamal Watson. Watson opened the scoring at 8:28 of the first period, firing a shot from the right wing that beat Matt Greenfield. Jasper responded at 11:28, cutting to the middle and finding the back of the net past Mikko Juusola to level the match.
The second period saw the Steelers dominate play, earning multiple chances in front of Juusola. Greenfield made a number of key saves, including a pad stop on Dowdy and a glove save on Ritchie. The Flames' Fazio was also tested heavily, making a blocker save on Juusola and a big glove stop on Ritchie. Despite the pressure, neither team could find the back of the net in the period.
In the third, the Steelers had a 3-minute power play but struggled to convert. They were also forced to kill a late interference penalty on Joona Huttula, and did so with composure. Greenfield made 22 saves on the night while Juusola stopped 24 shots, both earning strong grades in a tightly contested game.

The Steelers outshot the Flames 38-28 for the game, a testament to their control in the middle and late periods. Key performers included Jasper with a goal, Dowdy with multiple scoring chances, and Ritchie, who had a point and a shot on goal.

With the tie, the series remains level heading into the second leg at the Sky’s Edge on Sunday. The Steelers will look to build on home-ice advantage, while the Flames will aim to maintain their momentum.
Tickets for Sunday’s game are available now. The puck drops at 4 PM with doors opening at 3 PM.

The San Antonio Spurs edged the Dallas Mavericks 114-109 on Friday night, but the story was not the win. It was Victor Wembanyama’s 40-point, 13-rebound performance in just 26 minutes, a calculated move to reach the 65-game threshold required for regular-season award eligibility.
