Alex Ovechkin received a standing ovation from Pittsburgh fans during Saturday’s game between the Washington Capitals and Pittsburgh Penguins. The moment marked a rare display of respect in a rivalry that has defined two decades of NHL history. Ovechkin, 39, is in the final season of his contract and may not return to the NHL next season.
The Capitals’ star was acknowledged by the Penguins’ public address announcer, who said, “Ovi, thank you for 21 years of the greatest rivalry in hockey. It has been a pleasure.” The PA announcer added with a smile, “And if you want, we’re ready to go for 22.” Ovechkin waved to the crowd as fans at PPG Paints Arena gave him a heartfelt standing ovation. Players from both teams joined in, including Penguins captain Sidney Crosby.
Ovechkin and Crosby have faced each other 121 times in their careers, with the Capitals holding a 61-55-5 edge in that span. Ovechkin has recorded 67 goals and 143 points in those games, while Crosby has 60 goals and 142 points. Their rivalry has been one of the most storied in NHL history, spanning from the 2005–06 season to the present.

Ovechkin, who is in the final year of a five-year, $47.5 million contract, said earlier this week that he will make his decision about his future after the season. He currently ranks first in NHL history with 893 career goals and has 1,547 points in 1,467 games. Washington is currently a playoff team, but Ovechkin has not indicated whether he will return for a 22th season.

The Capitals and Penguins meet again in Washington next month, and that game could be the final regular-season meeting between the two teams with both players on the roster. The next game for Washington is Tuesday at home against the New York Rangers.

The San Antonio Spurs edged the Dallas Mavericks 114-109 on Friday night, but the story was not the win. It was Victor Wembanyama’s 40-point, 13-rebound performance in just 26 minutes, a calculated move to reach the 65-game threshold required for regular-season award eligibility.
