William Nylander has publicly affirmed his commitment to the Toronto Maple Leafs, stating clearly that he has no desire to leave the team despite ongoing speculation about the franchise’s direction. The 30-year-old winger, who signed an eight-year, $92 million contract extension with the Leafs in 2024, emphasized his love for Toronto and his desire to win with the club.
Nylander’s comments come amid uncertainty surrounding the Maple Leafs’ future, especially following the hiring of new general manager John Chayka. While a retooling of the roster around Auston Matthews and Nylander remains the most likely path, some observers have speculated that a full rebuild could be in store if Matthews opts out of his contract or loses interest in leading the team. Nylander, however, is not waiting for clarity, he’s already made his position known.
“I mean, I don’t want to go anywhere, I love Toronto, and this has been home for me for so long,” Nylander said in a recent YouTube video. “And nothing would make me happier than to win here. So I hope that one day that dream comes true.”
The Maple Leafs have one of the most talented cores in the league, with Nylander, Matthews, and Mitch Marner forming a trio that has consistently ranked among the top lines in the NHL. Marner’s absence due to injury this season has put even more pressure on Nylander and Matthews to carry the offense. With Marner sidelined, Nylander averaged 1.2 goals per game in the 2024-25 season, ranking 12th in the league in scoring.
Nylander’s full no-movement clause in his contract gives him the final say on any potential trade, and his recent remarks suggest he will not be on the market this summer. He also praised the incoming leadership of Mats Zuccarello, saying the veteran forward will “bring that to the table and I think help our club a lot.”

Recent reports indicate that Matthews remains committed to winning in Toronto, which bodes well for the team’s continuity. If Chayka decides to build around Matthews and Nylander, the winger’s commitment will be crucial. The Maple Leafs will need a healthy and productive Nylander to maintain their elite offensive output in the 2025-26 season.
The Leafs’ next major decision will come in July when unrestricted free agency begins. Chayka will have a full window to reshape the roster, but with Nylander and Matthews both vowing to compete in Toronto, the path forward appears to be one of stability and continued pursuit of the Stanley Cup.
