The Minnesota Wild walked away from a potential blockbuster trade for New York Rangers center Vincent Trocheck at the deadline, a move that could have helped them in their second-round series against the Colorado Avalanche. Despite discussions between the two teams, the deal never materialized due to Wild GM Bill Guerin’s reluctance to include top prospect Danila Yurov in the trade.
Trocheck, a 29-year-old center with 58 points in 82 games this season, was viewed as a solid upgrade for the Wild’s second line, which was led by Ryan Hartman. Hartman struggled against elite teams like the Avalanche, tallying just 13 goals and 28 points in 42 games after being moved into the top-six role. Minnesota’s lack of a reliable top-six center was a glaring issue in their 4-1 series loss to Colorado.
Arthur Staple of the Rangers Reacon podcast revealed that Yurov was the sticking point in the deal. The 22-year-old forward, who scored 14 goals and 38 points in 64 games this season, was deemed untouchable by Guerin. While the Wild were willing to include Hartman in the deal, the Rangers weren’t interested in acquiring a player who underperformed in high-stakes games.
Chris Drury, the Rangers’ general manager, was reportedly open to the trade but couldn’t agree on the return. The Wild’s insistence on keeping Yurov made the deal unworkable. Drury has been aggressive in reshaping the Rangers’ roster, but he couldn’t justify parting with a top-six center for a player who wasn’t a top asset.

The Wild’s decision to keep Yurov could pay off in the long run, but it left them short in the short term. With six unrestricted free agent forwards and two UFA defensemen, Guerin will have to be creative in the offseason to address his team’s center issue. Quinn Hughes, who had a career year with 54 points in 82 games, will be a key figure in those discussions.
Guerin has until July 10 to make decisions on his UFAs and will likely explore trade options to improve his roster. Whether he’ll consider dangling Yurov in front of Drury again remains to be seen, but the window for a big move is closing fast.
