The Montreal Canadiens are racing against the clock to finalize a long-term contract with Ivan Demidov before a looming NHL rule change eliminates eight-year deals after September. General manager Kent Hughes and the team are eager to lock in the young defenseman for as long as possible, and with Demidov expressing a strong desire to stay, the pieces are in place for a quick resolution.
Unlike the protracted negotiations with Lane Hutson, who signed an eight-year, $8.85 million AAV contract in January 2026, Demidov’s situation carries added urgency. The Canadiens don’t want to risk missing the window to secure the maximum term. Hutson’s deal was finalized after a slow start to his season, and the pressure to finalize a contract helped refocus him. Montreal is hoping a similar outcome with Demidov, who has emerged as a cornerstone of the team’s rebuild.
Hughes has been clear about the team’s stance. “There is no doubt we see Ivan as a core player of our team,” he said. “Ideally, we would sign him to a long-term contract rather than a short-term contract.” Demidov echoed that sentiment, saying, “This is a team that’s going to win, not only one Cup, but I think a couple more,” adding, “That’s my expectation. That’s what I see in this team.”
The Canadiens are in a strong position to finalize the deal on or just after July 1, when new cap space becomes available. This timing gives Hughes flexibility to add depth to a young, cost-effective core that includes players like Cole Caufield, Juraj Slafkovsky, and Hutson. With Demidov on board, the defense becomes even more formidable.
Demidov has played 82 games in the 2025-26 season, averaging 22:34 of ice time per game while recording 42 points (14 goals, 28 assists). His two-way play and leadership have made him a favorite among fans and coaching staff alike. The Canadiens are confident they can offer him a contract that matches his value and growth potential.

While the team is pushing for a quick resolution, Demidov also holds some leverage. The upcoming rule change gives him an opportunity to negotiate with more confidence, knowing the Canadiens are eager to finalize terms. Whether he uses that leverage to push for a higher AAV or other incentives remains to be seen.
The Canadiens are expected to finalize Demidov’s contract by late July at the latest. With the new cap space and a clear vision for the future, Montreal is positioning itself for a long playoff run, and potentially multiple Stanley Cups.
