The Los Angeles Dodgers edged out the New York Yankees in a high-stakes Subway Series opener, 4-2, behind a stellar pitching performance and a rare offensive spark from catcher Will Smith. Meanwhile, Ranger Suarez dominated in his first start against his former team and Jung Hoo Lee made history with a rare inside-the-park home run.
With Shohei Ohtani resting for the first time this season, the Dodgers leaned on Smith, who led off for the first time in his career and delivered. Smith crushed a solo home run in his first at-bat against Yankees rookie Landen Roupp, giving L.A. an early lead. Smith’s blast marked his third home run of the season and came after a 2-for-4 night at the plate. Ohtani is expected back in the lineup by Friday, which could shift Smith back to his usual role in the middle of the order.
Cam Schlittler made his first start of the season for New York, but struggled with control in a 4-2 loss. The right-hander allowed four runs on five hits through five innings. Schlittler, who emerged as a Cy Young contender in the 2025 postseason, has yet to find the same dominance in 2026. Opposing him was Clay Holmes, who continued his stellar season. Holmes has now allowed two earned runs or fewer in each of his eight starts this season, striking out 43 batters across 47 innings.
In Boston, Ranger Suarez made his first start since returning from a minor hamstring injury. Facing his former team, the Phillies, for the first time, Suarez tossed 5 1/3 scoreless innings, striking out eight batters. He was removed after 76 pitches but left satisfied with his performance. "To be honest, it was like a regular game," Suarez said through an interpreter. "Obviously, I know they were my old teammates, but I wanted to just get deep in the game." Philadelphia signed Suarez in 2012; Boston handed him a five-year, $130 million deal this offseason.
Jung Hoo Lee made history in a 6-4 Giants loss to the Dodgers. Lee’s inside-the-park home run in the fifth inning was the first for a Giants player at Dodger Stadium since 1963. The ball skipped off the left field wall, past Teoscar Hernandez, allowing Lee to round the bases unassisted. It was his first inside-the-parker at any level, and it momentarily tied the game. The Dodgers responded with three runs in the sixth, led by Hernandez’s two-run double.
The Subway Series continues Saturday, with Gerrit Cole and Max Scherzer set to square off in a battle of aces. The Red Sox look to rebound against the Phillies, while the Giants aim to bounce back from a tough loss to L.A.
