The Oakland Athletics are set to promote top prospect Gage Jump for his Major League debut, per Jeff Passan of ESPN. The 23-year-old left-hander, ranked third in the A’s farm system by MLB Pipeline, is expected to step into a shaky rotation that lacks consistent production outside of Luis Severino and Jeffrey Springs.
Jump entered the 2024 draft as the 73rd overall pick out of LSU and quickly established himself as a workhorse. In 2025, he tossed 112 2/3 innings between High-A and Double-A, posting a 3.28 ERA and sub-3.00 FIP. While he didn’t crack MLB Pipeline’s top 100 prospects last year, he climbed to No. 41 in the latest rankings.
At Triple-A Las Vegas, Jump has shown promise with a diverse pitch mix. He throws a four-seamer over 50% of the time but also regularly uses a slider (18.3%) and curveball (13.1%), with additional use of a sweeper and changeup. However, his 11.8% walk rate has raised some red flags after a cleaner 2025 season.
His most recent performance in Triple-A was a seven-inning start with nine strikeouts and zero walks. That outing came after limited action to start the year, he had yet to complete five innings with the Aviators through eight appearances.
Manager Mark Kotsay recently mentioned a possible IL move for Aaron Civale following Monday’s game, which could clear a rotation spot for Jump. The A’s have yet to officially announce the promotion but are expected to do so soon.
Jump’s promotion arrives at a critical time for the A’s rotation. Severino and Springs have been the only consistent starters, and injuries or inconsistency have hurt the team’s chances down the stretch. With Jump’s high strikeout rate, 33.1% at Triple-A, Oakland hopes to find a reliable fifth starter before the trade deadline.
The A’s will make a decision on Jump’s debut after Monday’s game. If promoted, he will take his place in a rotation that has struggled to hold leads and limit damage.
