Miami Marlins right-hander Sandy Alcantara is off to a scorching 2026 start, posting a 0.74 ERA through his first three outings as he looks to reestablish himself as an elite pitcher.
The 2022 NL Cy Young Award winner has struggled in recent seasons due to injuries and inconsistency, but a full year removed from Tommy John surgery has brought renewed hope. Alcantara has averaged more than eight innings per start and has already pitched 24 1/3 innings in 2026, showing the durability that once made him a cornerstone of the Marlins’ rotation.
Since receiving his Cy Young in 2022, Alcantara has posted a 4.73 ERA (95 ERA+) and 4.15 FIP across 59 starts, numbers that place him closer to a fifth starter than an ace. However, his 2026 performance suggests a significant turnaround. His strikeout and walk rates are better than they’ve been since 2022, and his ground ball rate is trending upward after dropping to 46.5% in 2025.
Alcantara’s 2025 season showed signs of promise late in the year. After a disastrous first half with a 7.22 ERA, he finished the season strong with a 3.33 ERA and 3.89 FIP. In the final six weeks of the regular season, he posted a 2.62 ERA with a 24.9% strikeout rate. When combining the second half of 2025 with the start of 2026, Alcantara has a 2.75 ERA, 3.53 FIP, 48.6% ground ball rate, and a 15.5 K-BB% in 108 innings across 16 starts.
One of the most encouraging trends for Alcantara is the lack of hard contact he’s allowed. He has surrendered just one barrel and a 28.6% hard-hit rate in 2026. If he can maintain a barrel rate in the five to six percent range and a hard-hit rate under 40%, his profile will look much closer to his peak than the previous two seasons, when he had a 7.8% barrel rate and a 42.6% hard-hit rate.
While Alcantara’s early success is impressive, there are valid concerns. He has benefited from a weak early schedule, facing the Rockies, White Sox, and Reds, all of whom have struggled offensively. His .159 BABIP is also well below his career average and unlikely to be sustained.
Nonetheless, the signs are encouraging for a pitcher who once dominated in the majors. The question now is whether this is a return to form or just a short-lived resurgence. The Marlins will be watching closely as the season progresses and Alcantara continues to face tougher competition.
