The Washington Nationals have become baseball's most prolific offense through 48 games of the 2026 season, scoring an MLB-leading 262 runs despite a .469 winning percentage and a run differential that suggests they are lucky to have won as many as they have.
At 5.46 runs per game, the Nationals have outscored the AL-leading New York Yankees by 18 runs and the second-place Atlanta Braves by 12. If they maintain this pace, they would set a new franchise record for scoring, surpassing the 2019 World Series champions.
Coming into the season, few expected the Nationals to lead baseball in scoring. In fact, FanGraphs projections still expect them to finish last in runs per game. Even so, if they hit at their projected pace of 4.28 runs per game for the remainder of the season, they will still finish with 750 runs, fifth in franchise history.
The Nationals' offensive success has not come by accident. Their .740 OPS ranks fifth in MLB, and their 108 wRC+ is sixth. They are not just relying on luck or timely hitting. Their .331 expected wOBA ranks seventh in the majors, and the BaseRuns formula suggests they "deserve" to score 5.10 runs per game, still among the top four in baseball.
Juan Soto's memory continues to power the Nationals' lineup, but it's the players acquired in the Soto trade who are leading the charge. Shortstop CJ Abrams and outfielder James Wood are both outhitting Soto this season. Wood leads the majors in runs scored and ranks in the top 20 in OPS and wRC+. Abrams, batting cleanup, ranks third in RBI and has been flirting with a .300 average.
Daylen Lile is the Nationals' third-highest offensive contributor with an 112 wRC+. Meanwhile, Joey Wiemer has been the team's best hitter by wRC+ in just 83 plate appearances, slashing .300/.410/.529. His performance was so strong that the Nationals optioned him in favor of Dylan Crews.
Right-handed batter Curtis Mead is also making an impact, posting a 133 wRC+ through 114 plate appearances. While Nasim Nuñez has struggled at the plate with a .187 batting average, his baserunning has been elite, he leads MLB with 20 stolen bases and ranks second in baserunning run value.
With eight weeks played and 36 weeks remaining, the Nationals have proven that their offense can compete with the best in baseball. The challenge now will be maintaining this level of production as the season progresses.
The Nationals will take on the Chicago White Sox on Wednesday, May 20, looking to continue their offensive dominance.
