The Chicago White Sox are set to call up right-handed pitcher David Sandlin for his Major League Baseball debut. The 25-year-old, who is already on Chicago’s 40-man roster, will need to clear space on the active roster. James Fegan of Sox Machine confirmed that Sandlin is expected to start for the White Sox, though the exact role remains uncertain as the team plays 13 games without a day off.
Sandlin’s journey to Chicago has been a winding one. Originally drafted by the Kansas City Royals in 2022, he was traded to the Boston Red Sox in 2024. Boston then sent Sandlin to the White Sox in a winter deal that also included Jordan Hicks, two players to be named later, and cash in exchange for Gage Ziehl. General manager Chris Getz called Sandlin “essentially” part of the return for Luis Robert Jr., as the salary savings from trading Robert (who was owed $20 million) helped Chicago absorb Hicks’ contract.
Despite not pitching in big league spring training due to back and forearm soreness, Sandlin has dominated in the minors. From his first rehab start at High-A Winston-Salem to his latest outing with Triple-A Charlotte, he has allowed just 12 hits in 16 1/3 innings while striking out 26 batters. He did not allow an earned run until his most recent start.
Getz praised Sandlin’s “mid-rotation” potential and his high-velocity fastball, which regularly reaches triple digits. “He’s got a chance to really impact our starting rotation this year,” Getz said in a statement from MLB.com’s Scott Merkin.
However, Sandlin still has work to do. In 2025, he walked 13 batters in just 23.2 innings at Triple-A Charlotte, leading to a 7.61 ERA and 5.27 FIP. His walk rate and control remain areas of concern for evaluators who project him as a No. 3 or 4 starter at best.
Sandlin’s promotion comes at a pivotal time for the White Sox, who are seeking stability in their starting rotation. Whether he makes a lasting impact or simply fills a short-term need, his electric stuff has already drawn attention.
The White Sox will face the Kansas City Royals on Saturday in the first of a three-game series. Sandlin’s debut could come in that matchup.
