The New York Liberty snapped their three-game home losing streak with an 88–80 victory over the Phoenix Mercury in a tightly contested game at Barclays Center on Wednesday, May 27. Breanna Stewart led the way with 24 points and 10 rebounds, while Sabrina Ionescu recorded a near triple-double with 18 points, 7 assists, and 6 rebounds. The win lifted New York to a 6–4 record on the season, keeping them in the thick of the Eastern Conference race.
The Liberty’s offense was sharp and disciplined, with Ionescu directing the tempo from the perimeter. Her 6.5 assists per game average translated into 7 dimes in the win, many of which found Stewart or Jonquel Jones inside. Jones added 16 points and 12 rebounds, giving New York a dominant 46–32 rebounding advantage. The Liberty’s ability to control the glass and limit second-chance opportunities for Phoenix was a key factor in the victory.
Phoenix, led by Kahleah Copper, fought back with a high-octane scoring attack. Copper tallied 26 points on 10-of-18 shooting, but struggled to find consistent help from her teammates. Natasha Cloud chipped in with 11 points and 6 rebounds, but the Mercury shot just 38% from the field and were outscored 24–16 in the paint.
A pivotal moment came in the fourth quarter when New York went on a 9–2 run fueled by defensive stops and quick transitions. Stewart’s driving layup with 3:12 remaining gave the Liberty an 83–76 lead, and they held on from there. The Liberty’s defense forced 14 Phoenix turnovers, many of which led to fast-break points.
The win moves New York into a tie for second place in the Eastern Conference, just two games behind the first-place Connecticut Sun. With the Liberty now 6–4 and the Mercury falling to 4–6, the East remains tightly packed with just 2.5 games separating the top five teams. New York will look to build on this momentum when they host the Chicago Sky on Saturday, June 1 at 7:00 PM ET.
