The San Antonio Spurs edged the Oklahoma City Thunder 103-82 in Game 4 of the Western Conference Finals on Sunday night to even the series at 2-2. Victor Wembanyama led the way with a career postseason-high 33 points and eight rebounds. Wembanyama also set a Spurs franchise record for most points in a rookie’s first playoff run with 324, surpassing Stephen Jackson’s previous mark of 307.
The Spurs came out with a different intensity following a 114-89 loss in Game 3. De'Aaron Fox said Gregg Popovich’s words after the loss helped shift the team’s focus. "Every team gets blown out," Fox said. "But just mentality-wise, I think that was one of the worst games we had probably of the season."
San Antonio’s defense tightened up, holding Oklahoma City to 1 of 11 from three in the first half. Stephon Castle credited the team’s adjustments. "We really paid attention to detail a lot better than Game 3," Castle said. "Watching the film, we gave them a lot of straight-line drives and just not rotating how we practiced."
Wembanyama capped the first half with a 40-foot buzzer-beater to give San Antonio a 47-34 lead. He shot 13-of-21 from the field and added three blocks. The Spurs outscored the Thunder by 17 points in the first half and never looked back.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander struggled in the loss, scoring just 19 points on 6-of-15 shooting. The Thunder shot 42.3% from the field compared to the Spurs’ 52.6%. Oklahoma City’s 1-of-11 start from beyond the arc in the first half was a major factor in the early deficit.
Wembanyama’s performance has been historic for a rookie in the playoffs. He now ranks second in points per game in the series with 27.5, trailing only Gilgeous-Alexander’s 28.5. The Spurs have won two of their last three games despite trailing in each.
Game 5 is set for Tuesday in Oklahoma City. The series is now a best-of-three road game for both teams, with the winner holding home-court advantage for the potential Game 7. The Thunder will look to regain home dominance after falling to 0-2 at home in the series.
