The San Antonio Spurs are doubling down on De'Aaron Fox as their franchise point guard despite the breakout season from rookie Dylan Harper. With Fox signed through 2030 on a four-year, $229 million extension, the Spurs are committed to a guard trio of Fox, Harper and Stephon Castle moving forward.
Fox's performance in the 2026 NBA Finals drew scrutiny and fueled speculation about his future in San Antonio. But according to Brian Windhorst on Monday's Sports Center, the Spurs have no plans to move on from the veteran. "I know there's a lot of interest in whether they might do something with De'Aaron Fox, but they are committed to him right now as their franchise point guard," Windhorst said. "And I think they will remain that way."
The Spurs acquired Fox ahead of the 2025 trade deadline and quickly made him a key part of their long-term plans. Fox responded with a strong 2025-26 season, averaging 23.8 points and 8.1 assists per game. His leadership was especially valuable in the playoffs, where he averaged 25.4 points and 8.9 assists over 16 postseason games. Fox missed part of the second round due to a high ankle sprain but returned for Game 3 of the Western Conference Finals.
The Spurs' financial flexibility also supports their decision to keep Fox. With Harper, Castle and Victor Wembanyama on rookie contracts through the 2027-28 season, the team can afford to carry Fox's $57.25 million salary in 2026-27 without exceeding the luxury tax.
Dylan Harper's emergence as a potential star has not changed the Spurs' plans. The second overall pick in the 2025 draft averaged 18.3 points and 6.5 assists in his rookie season. His playmaking and defensive versatility have made him a fixture in the rotation, but for now, he remains behind Fox in the hierarchy.
Fox's agent, Rich Paul, has seen similar situations with other stars and is likely confident in the long-term vision of the Spurs. The team's front office has shown patience with young players and is now applying that same philosophy to its veteran leader.
The Spurs will begin training camp in October with the full guard trio intact. How they divide minutes and roles will be a key storyline as the 2026-27 season approaches.

Washington Wizards forward Alex Sarr underwent surgery to repair a fractured foot on Monday after sustaining the injury during an offseason workout. The team expects the second-year forward to be fully recovered in time for the start of the 2024-25 NBA season.
