The New York Knicks are preparing to make a strong push to re-sign Mitchell Robinson in the 2026 NBA free agency cycle. With Karl-Anthony Towns anchoring the starting center position, Robinson's role as a depth piece and elite rebounder remains valuable. The Knicks plan to go over the luxury tax line for the 2026-27 season, signaling their intent to retain key contributors.
Mitchell Robinson has carved out a unique niche in the NBA. Over the past three seasons he has averaged 8.4 rebounds per game, ranking in the top five among all centers. In 2023-24 he pulled down 10 or more rebounds in 42 games, including a career-high 19 rebounds in a February matchup against the Philadelphia 76ers. Despite averaging just 15.2 minutes per game last season, he still managed to post a player efficiency rating (PER) of 13.8.
Robinson entered the league as the 36th overall pick in the 2018 draft and has remained a constant on the Knicks roster. He is the only player currently on the team who predates the 2019 front office changes under Leon Rose and William Wesley. This longevity has made him a fan favorite in New York and a symbol of the franchise’s recent rebuild.
The Knicks will face competition for Robinson’s services. Other teams will likely pursue him given his unique skill set and relatively low cost. The Knicks have not yet reached an agreement with Robinson’s representatives Thaddeus Foucher and Joe Smith. A deal would likely come in the $12-15 million per year range, depending on how many years the Knicks want to commit.
The decision to re-sign Robinson would provide stability and continuity. With Towns under contract through 2027, Robinson’s rebounding and rim protection could allow New York to maintain a strong interior presence. The Knicks could also explore sign-and-trade scenarios if other teams show interest in Towns.
The Knicks will have to make a decision by July 1, 2026, when free agency begins. With the luxury tax line expected to rise, the window to secure Robinson at a reasonable price is closing. For now the Knicks are in position to make a compelling offer.
