Great Britain was blanked 5-0 by Hungary in a pivotal World Championship matchup on Tuesday night, extending their winless streak in Group A play. The loss puts GB on the defensive as they aim to avoid relegation in the top-tier division.
Hungary struck first just over two minutes in when Krisztian Nagy converted a short-side shot from the right circle. Great Britain responded with pressure in the early going, including a pair of wide efforts from Josh Waller and a stopped chance by Nathanael Halbert. But Hungary doubled their lead late in the first when Dominik Szongoth used a backhand finish to extend the advantage to 2-0.
The second period brought more trouble for GB. A shorthanded goal by Istvan Terbocs just 90 seconds into the frame made it 3-0, prompting GB to pull Ben Bowns in favor of Mat Robson. The move didn’t halt the bleeding, as Csanad Erdely broke clear but was denied by Robson’s skate save.
GB had chances to cut into the lead. Liam Kirk had two strong looks, and Waller’s shot rang off the crossbar. Robson made a key save on Janos Hari late in the period and turned away a late breakaway by Johnny Curran. But Hungary wasn’t done.
Late in the third, Hungary sealed the game with two quick goals. Terbocs set up Nagy for a two-on-one finish, and Nagy added a second tally from the slot to make it 5-0. The rout was complete.

GB outshot Hungary 28-22 in the game, but couldn’t solve Bence Balizs in net, who made 28 saves. Robson, who entered in the second, stopped 10 of 11 shots in relief.
With the loss, Great Britain remains winless in the tournament and drops to 0-4-0 in Group A. The team will look to regroup when they face Switzerland on Thursday at 20:20 local time (19:20 BST). A win is critical if GB wants to stay in the running for a top-tier finish.
