The Atlanta Braves have officially outrighted 35-year-old catcher Austin Wynns to Triple-A Gwinnett, while reinstating catcher Drake Baldwin from the 10-day injured list. The move reduces the team’s 40-man roster to 39 players and clears the way for Baldwin’s return to the active roster. Wynns has the right to elect free agency but the Braves have not yet confirmed whether he will do so.
Wynns, a veteran of six MLB teams including the Orioles, Giants, Dodgers, Rockies, Reds and Athletics, has posted a .228/.273/.342 batting line across 840 career plate appearances. His defensive value and ability to work with pitchers have made him a useful depth catcher, but his offensive struggles have limited his big league opportunities this season.
The Braves have been actively managing their catching depth due to injuries. Both Sean Murphy and Drake Baldwin landed on the IL in May, Murphy with a finger fracture and Baldwin with an oblique strain. To fill the void, Atlanta added Sandy León and Chadwick Tromp. The team acquired Wynns from the Angels earlier this month, which led to Tromp being optioned. With Baldwin now back, León will serve as the backup.
Wynns was designated for assignment by the Athletics before the season and signed a minor league deal with the Angels in April. The team traded him to Atlanta in a move that allowed them to offload his contract while giving the Braves a veteran catching option. Wynns made just one hit in 14 plate appearances with Atlanta.
With five years of MLB service time, Wynns has the right to reject the outright assignment and become a free agent. If he chooses this route, any team can sign him at the league minimum prorated rate for the remainder of the season. The Athletics would still be responsible for the remaining $1.1 million of his 2024 salary.
The Braves are expected to continue monitoring their catching situation as Baldwin returns to action. The team has five days to make any additional roster moves if needed before the next game.
